The Rt. Rev. Chester L. Talton

Bio: 

Chester L. Talton was born September 22, 1941 in Eldorado, Arkansas and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area in California.  Bishop Talton is a graduate of California State University East Bay (Hayward) and The Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, California. He was ordained in 1970 in the Diocese of California. He served as Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Los Angeles from the time of his election and ordination in 1990 until his retirement in June of 2010.

Bishop Talton served congregations in California at Good Shepherd Church, Berkeley, All Saints Church, Carmel and St. Matthias, Seaside, California.  He was Vicar of Holy Cross Church in Chicago, Illinois and then served as rector of St. Philip’s Church, St. Paul, Minnesota.  In 1980, Bishop Talton moved to New York to join the staff of Trinity Parish as Mission Officer.  In 1985 he became rector of St. Philip’s Church in Harlem from which he was elected Bishop Suffragan of Los Angeles. In March of 2011 he was invited to the Diocese of San Joaquin to serve as Bishop.

Bishop Talton is married to April Grayson Talton who holds a Master of Arts in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles and has worked as project manager for residential developments in Los Angeles. Bishop Talton was previously married to Karen Talton, who passed away in 2003. He has four children and eight grandchildren who live in New York, Florida, and Pasadena, California.
