Welcomes You

Tyson House Episcopal/Lutheran Campus Ministry at University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Rev. John Tirro

Sunday evenings begin at 6:04, with a dinner home-cooked and served by a local congregation.* There’s an easy energy of folks bustling about before dinner, students catching up with friends and making new ones, musicians learning songs we’ll be using in worship, and folks providing dinner carrying it in and setting up.

At 6:04, we pray and eat! At this point, we make an intentional shift from clock time (chronos or chronological time) toward a sense of “feels like time” (kairos or “fullness of time”). In emotional terms, we move from the tick-tick-tick of the clock, toward simply being present. In practical terms, when people are finishing up dinner and starting to clear their plates, it’s time for worship! Music starts in the chapel and we enter, adding our voices to the song.
