Episcopal Relief and Development is helping children in the Diocese of Soroti in the Church of Uganda after rebel attacks in the area. Attacks in the Kaberamaido District, including one on a secondary school near Soroti in eastern Uganda, have forced thousands of people to flee. Thousands of children have been kidnapped in the past year. Children are being used as soldiers, laborers, and sexual slaves.
"At least six thousand people have run to Soroti and about three thousand of them are children," said the Rt. Rev. Dr. Charles Obaikol Ebitu, Bishop of Soroti. "I am concerned about the condition of children who have run to Soroti without clothing, blankets, and food."
Episcopal Relief and Development is providing blankets, maize, and medicines to children in Soroti, Uganda. On behalf of the Episcopal Church, ERD has advanced $10,000 to the Diocese of Soroti to meet the basic needs of these children.
