Episcopal Relief and Development continues to provide emergency assistance to the Diocese of Liberia following weeks of violence and the growing risk of starvation for thousands of Liberians.
Heavy fighting in Monrovia over the past two weeks has killed hundreds and left tens of thousands displaced. On August 4, about 200 Nigerian troops landed at Monrovia airport. This unit is the first contingent of West African peacekeeping troops to arrive.
"We are hopeful that food can be distributed to people in the city now that peacekeeping forces have arrived in Monrovia," said Janette O’Neill, Senior Program Advisor for ERD. "The Episcopal Church will distribute emergency food rations the moment they are available and workers can get them to those in need," said O’Neill.
On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development has advanced $20,000 in emergency assistance to the Diocese of Liberia. The funds will provide emergency food and supplies to people in and around Monrovia.
