As Liberians begin returning to Monrovia, many are hungry and sick. There are reports of starvation and medical crises throughout the country. Violent clashes threaten the lives of thousands. The U.N. agency coordinating the international relief effort estimates that over half a million people do not have access to clean water and food.
Episcopal Relief and Development is responding to the needs of Liberians. ERD has a long relationship with the Episcopal Church in Liberia and has provided ongoing assistance to vulnerable people.
A formally signed peace accord ended Liberia's brutal civil war. West African peacekeepers and U.S. Marines secured Monrovia's port so food and other critical supplies can get to weary women, children, and men. Gyude Bryant, Chair of the Board of the Episcopal Church in Liberia, has been named Chairman of the Transitional Government for Liberia.
On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development has partnered with Church World Service to provide canned meat, blankets, health kits, and medicine boxes to the most vulnerable populations in Monrovia and surrounding areas. ERD has advanced $15,000 for emergency food and supplies to help Liberians in desperate need of assistance.
ERD continues to pray for Liberians and remains committed to helping people in the country rebuild their lives. To support the people of Liberia and learn more about ERD's work worldwide, call (800) 334-7626, ext. 5129.
