Hurricane Isabel's wrath is evident along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. "The eye of the storm came ashore near Cape Lookout and then headed along a narrow band northwest through North Carolina and into Virginia," said the Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel, III, Bishop of East Carolina. "The destruction is massive around the Outer Banks, particularly on Hattaras Island," said Bishop Daniel.
As the recovery process begins, North Carolina communities populated with the working poor struggle to rebuild. Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency supplies to those most affected by Hurricane Isabel such as the uninsured, recently unemployed, and rural poor.
"Our relief efforts will be directed to people who may fall between the cracks and have few resources to get back on their feet," said Bishop Daniel. "The first part is clean up and restoring basic services and then the rebuilding can begin."
On behalf of the people in the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development has advanced $10,000 in emergency assistance to the Diocese of East Carolina. The funds will provide items such as water, baby supplies, personal hygiene products, and bed linens.
ERD is in contact with the Dioceses of Easton, Virginia, Southern Virginia, and Washington and stands ready to respond to their needs following the hurricane.
