Emergency grants totaling $120,000 were made in December to help provide relief in the wake of several disasters. The Episcopal Church in Rwanda, Diocese of Kigali, received $25,000 to provide food assistance to those suffering from food shortages caused by a drought.
A $25,000 grant was given to Church World Service to provide shelter to people in Southeast Asia made homeless by recent floods in the region.
The Diocese of Los Angeles received $25,000 to assist victims of a collapsed building in Echo Park. The grant was used to purchase clothing and to help those left homeless find new housing.
EPISCOPAL Relief and Development also gave a $20,000 emergency grant to the Diocese of Alabama to assist people in Tuscaloosa who were affected by a tornado. The diocese used the funds for cleanup and new construction of shelter for people who lost their homes. A portion of the grant was used to hire a caseworker to counsel the victims.
The Diocese of Montana received $25,000 to help those whose homes were burned this past summer in the Bitterroot area. The grant funds a joint effort by other faith-based groups, such as the Lutherans, Mennonites, and The Salvation Army, as well as the American Red Cross, to provide counseling, funds for moving, shelter and rehabilitation.
