At least 300 people are dead and 1,500 more are missing after a mudslide wiped out a village in the eastern Philippines on Friday morning.
Hundreds of homes have been buried in the farming village of Guinsaugon on Leyte Island in the central Philippines. Two hundred students in an elementary school were covered in up to 30 feet of mud.
This region has experienced two weeks of nonstop rain which is thought to be linked to the La Nina weather pattern. Some residents and local officials say that the effects of illegal logging, which stripped the mountainside of protective vegetation, and flash floods helped trigger the slide.
The ERD staff has reached out to our Anglican partners in the Philippines. We stand ready to respond as needs become identified.
Please pray for those suffering in the aftermath of this tragedy.
