Episcopal Relief and Development will provide emergency assistance to people affected by Hurricane Noel.
Noel, a Category 1 hurricane that began last week as a tropical storm swept through the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas, and Cuba killing at least 115 people.
Heavy rainfall in these countries have caused flooding and mudslides leading to the displacement of more than 80,000 people and isolating small towns and villages in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Many homes were destroyed and in the Dominican Republic, three days of intense rainfall has caused an estimated $30 million in damages to plantain, rice, and cacao plantations. Hurricane Noel is the deadliest storm of the 2007 hurricane season.
Our staff is in communication with the Dioceses of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Episcopal Relief and Development is preparing to provide emergency support such as food, first aid supplies, and temporary shelter.
Please pray for the safety of the many people and communities affected by this devastating storm.
