ERD Supports Families Following Tornadoes in Nebraska

6/3/2004
[ERD]  Episcopal Relief and Development is assisting people in southern Nebraska after more than a dozen tornadoes leveled homes and buildings. Damage from high winds and hail destroyed homes in the towns of Firth, Wilbur, and Beatrice. A tornado flattened the town of Hallam where all 276 residents were evacuated.

Severe weather struck states in the Midwest and northeast including Iowa, West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania in late May.

"The damage, which literally wiped Hallam off the map, is intense and the needs are immediate and continuing, especially for medicine, food and bedding for displaced people who lost their homes," said the Rt. Rev. Joe Burnett, Bishop of Nebraska.

On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development has advanced emergency funds to the Diocese of Nebraska to provide emergency medical supplies, clothes, food, mattresses, and bedsprings to people directly affected by the tornadoes.

To assist people affected by the storms in Kentucky and respond immediately after
disasters in the United States and around the world, donate to the Emergency Relief Fund at http://www.er-d.org/ , or call (800) 334-7626, ext. 5129. Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development, c/o Emergency Relief Fund, PO Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101.

Episcopal Relief and Development saves lives and builds hope in communities around the world. We provide emergency assistance in times of disaster. When the immediate crisis is over, we rebuild devastated communities and offer long-term solutions in the areas of food security, health care, and HIV/AIDS.

How ERD is making a difference...

Countries
We lift communities out of poverty around the world in areas such as Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. We partner with local organizations in the Anglican Communion to ensure vulnerable people have healthy food to eat and get proper health care.

Domestic
We provide critical supplies to people through local dioceses after natural and human-made disasters. We partner with the dioceses to get life-saving aid to children and their families and stay with communities after the crisis to provide ongoing support.
