ERD Supports Families Following Tornadoes in Nebraska

Posted: Thursday, June 03, 2004
Episcopal Relief and Development is assisting people in southern Nebraska after more than a dozen tornadoes leveled homes and buildings. Damage from high winds and hail destroyed homes in the towns of Firth, Wilbur, and Beatrice. A tornado flattened the town of Hallam where all 276 residents were evacuated.

Severe weather struck states in the Midwest and northeast including Iowa, West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania in late May.

"The damage, which literally wiped Hallam off the map, is intense and the needs are immediate and continuing, especially for medicine, food and bedding for displaced people who lost their homes," said the Rt. Rev. Joe Burnett, Bishop of Nebraska.

On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development has advanced emergency funds to the Diocese of Nebraska to provide emergency medical supplies, clothes, food, mattresses, and bedsprings to people directly affected by the tornadoes.
