WORKSHOPS:

Session I

A.  "Women's Spiritual Growth and the Face of God: A Visual Presentation"

Spirituality is shaped by the kind of relationship that we perceive ourselves to have with God. In this presentation we will look at art work that portrays the reality of God and consider how the various images might affect our spirituality. Art will be both traditional and contemporary.

The Reverend Sharon Turner is a doctoral candidate at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary where her special focus is Christian Nurture. She has served as priest on the staff of Holy Spirit Episcopal, Houston; St. Michael and All Angels, Dallas; and is presently associated with Transfiguration, Dallas. She has earned a B.F.A. (art), M. Ed. and M. Div. and continues as a practicing artist.

  1. “Reflecting the Light of Jesus as Healer”

Learn some helpful hints on making visits to those in a hospital, nursing home, or homebound, with a special emphasis on listening and the power of silence.

The Reverend Trudie Smither is the Associate Rector at St. Christoper’s Episcopal Church, Dallas.  She is the Diocese of Dallas representative to the Assembly of Episcopal Healthcare Chaplains and is a certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains.  She also serves on the Standing Committee of HIV/AIDS for the National Church.

Session II

  1. “Young Adult Ministry”

The Church has defined young adults as (roughly) 20-35 year olds, and has spent much time exploring this ministry.  Young Adults are:  college students and non-students; professional and non-professionals; married and single; married with children and married with no children, etc. Every church is different and its definition of young adults will be different.  This generation refuses to be nailed down, but is eager to be a viable and valued member of their churches.  Programming is not the solution!  A genuine, authentic community of faith is what this generation of young adults is seeking.

How can we identify the needs of our young women?  How can we truly minister to them? Why is programming not the solution?

Erin Shaver serves the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas as the Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, and serves as the Staff Director and Assistant to the Dean for Camp Capers. She served as Youth Minister at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi after graduating from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in Geography Education and a minor in History. She is a member of St David's Episcopal Church in San Antonio.

  1. “A Call to Action”

The focus of the National ECW Board this triennium is ministry to women and children.  We are intentionally choosing to make a difference through education programs that inform and empower others. The specific target areas are literacy, non-violence, leadership development, and interfaith education and outreach.  Learn more about what this means for your ECW.  Please come prepared to share.   We look forward to your response to this vital social justice program.

Mary Ann Lawing is the Social Justice Chair for the National ECW Board.  She is also the immediate past President of the Diocese of Kansas ECW Board, President of the Diocese of Kansas Daughters of the King, and Vice-President of the Province VII Daughters of the King.  She serves on the Board of Directors of the Episcopal Social Services of Wichita.
