Higher Education Check-In, December, 2006

Network Chair:  Susan Hanson
Email Address:   sh17@txstate.edu

What is the purpose of this Network’s ministry?   To encourage student leadership, to be a resource and network for chaplains, to serve as an advocate for campus ministry to the larger church, to develop a community that engages in worship, study, and service

What is the structure of this Network? We have one representative from each diocese, selected by the chair. Some of these chaplains serve in stand-alone ministries, while others are connected to parishes.

What are some highlights to report?
• Ten students, two chaplains, and two mentors from the Lutheran-Episcopal campus ministry at Texas State traveled to New York for spring break to work in several soup kitchens in the city.
• Susan Hanson attended the annual leadership meeting of Province VII at Mustang Island, Texas.
• Four chaplains from Province VII attended the chaplains’ gathering in June: Susan Hanson (Texas State), Hershel Hartford (U. of Arkansas), Mike Kyle (Diocese of W. Missouri), and Russ Pollock (Southwest Oklahoma State).
• Two students from Texas State and three from the Diocese of W. Missouri attended the Young Adult Festival.
• A friend of Canterbury at Texas Tech gave $10,000 to improve communications by and among campus ministries in the province. Susan developed guidelines for distributing the funds and then invited campus ministers from around the province to apply for grants of up to $1,000. The following ministries received grants: the Diocese of West Missouri, Lamar University, Rice University, Southwest Oklahoma State, Stephen F. Austin University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Texas.

Meet Province VII's Student Representative to the National Episcopal Student Leadership Team

Andrew Davis, a native of Lubbock and now a senior majoring in mathematical economics at Rice University, is the Province VII representative to the national Episcopal Student Leadership Team. He'd like to pass on this message about Celebrate!, the ecumenical student gathering scheduled for Dec. 28-Jan. 1 in New Orleans:

Hello and good news. The Celebrate! Web site is finally up and can be found at <http://www.cescm.org/Celebrate06/>. This Web site contains detailed information about when and where the conference will be held. There is a general schedule for the event, although the Episcopal schedule is still undergoing some slight alterations. It is going to be a lot of fun and I hope that we can all work to gather as much student support as possible. I don't like to harp on money, but I would like to emphasize that the cost per student is $275. So, if at all possible, it would be wonderful if all the different ministries tried to work scholarships into the budget so that as many students as possible can attend.

Thank you,
Andrew Davis
