 Who We Are

Who We Are: Our Christian Roots
Anglicans believe in the orthodox or catholic beliefs about God, God’s incarnation in Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit after Jesus’s death and resurrection. These beliefs were expressed by the early church in its "creeds", and are shared by the Christian churches throughout the world.
Christians believe that God so loved the world, that he was born as a human being in Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of the world on a cross in Jerusalem, and was resurrected by God. We believe that after Jesus’ death, God sent the Holy Spirit to be among us eternally.

The incarnation, that is, the coming of Christ among us as a man, demonstrates that God is concerned with all human experiences and understands them. Through his ministry, death and resurrection, Jesus made possible the reconciliation of God and humankind.

God sends his Holy Spirit to be a guide and teacher. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit which Christians believe supports and leads the Church in its mission to share the Good News of the Gospels.

The Diocese of Taiwan is a community of Christian believers, called together by God to be a witness to God’s love and stewards of God’s creation. We are united by a common desire to live our lives following the teaching and will of God.

Our Anglican Roots

We are members of the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A. and the worldwide Anglican Communion, a family of churches descended from the Church of England. The Church of England broke off from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century over questions of church governance and organization. Churches in the Anglican Communion are governed pastorally by bishops, and in other matters by meetings and votes of lay people, clergy, and bishops.

The Episcopal Church of the United States of America (ECUSA) has its roots in the Church of England beliefs of many English colonists. The word "Episcopal" comes from the Latin word for "bishop", and refers to the community of bishops who together are the leaders of the church. The Episcopal Church is the U.S. community of Anglican believers.

Anglicanism came to Taiwan from Chinese Anglicans escaping from the mainland and from Taiwan’s links to the United States. American military chaplains provided much of the early Anglican leadership in Taiwan, and this is the historical reason we are linked to the Anglican Communion through ECUSA
