Habits of Grace, May 29, 2020: Pray for the entire human family
As we learn how to adjust our lives given the reality of the coronavirus and the request to do our part to slow its spread by practicing social distancing, I invite you to join me each week to take a moment to cultivate a ‘habit of grace.’ A new meditation will be posted each week […]

Misinformation, Disinformation, Fake News: Why Do We Care?
It can be tempting to think that the fear-inducing, hyper-partisan, misleading, and outright false content pervasive today is an exclusively modern problem. Yet for thousands of years, our Jewish and Christian ancestors have taught that deception is as old as humanity itself. In Genesis 3, the serpent manipulates Eve through a series of misleading and half-true statements to eat the forbidden fruit, then makes Adam do the same by offering him the choice through a trusted source. Sound like anything that has crossed your social media feed recently?

Rock Solid When Everything Feels Up in the Air, Easter 5 (A) – May 10, 2020
[RCL]: Acts 7:55-60; Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16; 1 Peter 2:2-10; John 14:1-14 It all feels so up in the air. When have so many people, everywhere, felt so uncertain, had so many unanswered and unanswerable questions all at the same time? When have so many plans been upended, suspended? When have so many guidelines been provisional, […]

All Sinners, Epiphany 6 (A) – February 16, 2020
[RCL]: Deuteronomy 30:15-20 or Sirach 15:15-20; Psalm 119:1-8; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; Matthew 5:21-37 There have been many good and talented comedy troupes throughout the years: Burns and Allen, Martin and Lewis, the original cast of Saturday Night Live, for instance. Of course, there is Monty Python, so good it hurts. But of all the wonderful […]

Testimony, Epiphany 2 (A) – January 19, 2020
[RCL]: Isaiah 49:1-7; Psalm 40:1-12; 1 Corinthians 1:1-9; John 1:29-42 Don’t you find it remarkable that we know anything at all? If you think about it, we don’t know much of anything unless we have been taught it by another person. Engaging in a website or a film or a book privately is being taught […]

AdventWord 2019: 16. Learn
We learn through information and through experience. The work of the General Convention Office involves creating information and resources for the Church as well as planning and staffing experiences for the whole Church. The GCO is responsible for or has oversight of much of the information – Constitution and Canons, historical records (e.g. Journal of […]

Today, December 10th, is the worldwide commemoration of Human Rights Day and the final day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence that runs each year from November 25th – December 10th. And yet, it is not the final day. Gender-based violence requires our sustained action 365 days a year. In this spirit, […]

AdventWord 2019: 6. House
Scraping windows is one of those chores that can only be done slowly. Repeatedly. Diligently. Painstakingly. And it is awful, boring, sweat-producing, tedious work. I was scraping our windows so that we could repaint them a newer, shinier, more appealing hue of white, in an attempt to lure a buyer for our house. I was […]

In spring 2018, the Evangelism Office of The Episcopal Church created the Episcopal Evangelists Facebook group. It was born from the desire to begin connecting evangelists – young and old, novice and experienced – across the Church. Here on the Evangelism blog, we will be sharing stories from the Facebook group—stories we think can help others in their […]

Today our Easter celebrations take a dramatic turn. Today we recognize the otherworldly departure and absence of our Lord, as we remember his […]

A Catholic Church for a Global World
Every Sunday in church, Episcopalians affirm that we belong to a church that is, among other things, “catholic.” It is basic to the understanding of who we are: the Christian church is universal—the root meaning of the word “catholic”—and so spans the world. It is the catholicity of the church that positions it so well […]

Indispensable, Epiphany 3 (C) – 2019
“The knee bone’s connected to the… thigh bone. The thigh bone’s connected to the… hip bone. The hip bone’s connected to the…,” and so on. Does this sound familiar? Remembering this song is appropriate in getting us to the punchline. It comes from an era of romantic songs and bobby sox. There is also an […]

Bible Study: Proper 21 (B) – 2018
Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22 The book of Esther does not contain a direct mention of the name of God. Many have asked through the centuries why this is so, or where God is in the book. This is an important observation to make because any skeptic could make a clear case that God is absent […]
