December 11 – A Sign for You: Hanblechiya

Advent Reflections

Advent is the start of the new liturgical year. For me, it can also be a time to reflect, reorient, and recalibrate so that I can start anew. In my Lakota culture, we “go on the hill” to hanblechiya or cry for a vision. It is a time, place, and space where we communicate with the sacred, recalibrate our spiritual compass, see things from a different perspective, recharge, gain clarity or direction, listen for an answer; and sometimes it is a space to lament and heal. Advent is a time to metaphorically “go on the hill” to hanblechiya. In my work with racial reconciliation, as you can probably imagine, I see a great need for lament and healing. For me, hanblechiya helps me find a vision of right-relationship and how to get there: Right-relationship with ourselves, with creation, with each other, and with the Creator. Sometimes, we have to reflect on the brokenness in our lives in order to find the way forward. Going on the hill can help us lament that brokenness and see ways that we can build connections and heal relationships again. This Advent, I invite you join in me in hanblechiya, crying out to God and listening for her still small voice. God hears our cries and gives us grace to start anew.

This will be a sign for you: Hanblechiya.

Join us this Advent and Christmas (and all year long!) in The Episcopal Church. We invite you to find a congregation in your area by visiting episcopalassetmap.org and searching for a church nearby.
