Take a continental journey (and maybe a sentimental one, too!) with Empire Viols as they traverse Europe. Hear entrancing music by Sainte-Colombe, Marin Marais, Antonio Vivaldi, and Johann Schenck, as well as a transcription of an organ sonata by Ludwig Krebs, student of J.S. Bach. Some surprises and music for solo harpsichord are also in store.
About the Artists:
Founded in 1994, Empire Viols has focused on the rich repertoire for two viols and harpsichord, while also expanding its programs with daring and adventurous transcriptions of music originally composed for other instruments. The ensemble performs in the Northeast U.S. and beyond, and was for almost 20 years in residence at New York's Second Presbyterian Church on the Upper West Side. Ms. Stober and Ms. McGaughey were featured on composer Debra Kaye's debut CD, "And So It Begins," in 2014.
Martha McGaughey was a member of the Paris-based Five Centuries Ensemble as well as the California-based group Musical Assembly. She has recorded on the Erato and EMI labels, and taught at Stanford University and the Mannes College of Music.
Carlene Stober performs on the viol with Abendmusik and other ensembles. She has appeared on Prairie Home Companion and with the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and was a featured musician in Theatre for a New Audience's original production of Pericles. On period cello, she was continuo cellist of Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity Church in Manhattan for 15 years, and is a member of the Grenser Trio, a clarinet-cello-fortepiano group.
Arthur Haas, winner of the top prize in the Paris International Harpsichord Competition, is a member of the Aulos Ensemble. His solo CDs include recordings of Jean-Philippe Rameau, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre and François Couperin. He is professor of harpsichord and early music at SUNY Stony Brook and is a member of the Yale faculty.
