Description:

Polyhymnia, ensemble-in-residence at The Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch, will present a concert of music from Holy Week.  Each year, the Christian faithful undertake an intense and emotional liturgical journey which begins with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, and follows the last week of his life through the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, to the moment just before the Resurrection. Music from the elaborate liturgies of Holy Week runs the full gamut of emotions, from exultation to deep sadness. Renaissance composers, moved by the intense spirituality of Holy Week, and inspired by the rich tapestry of liturgical drama, composed a vast body of beautiful music to ornament the masses and offices of the week.  Music on this concert will include several pieces from Tomás Luis de Victoria’s 1585 Officium Hebdomadæ Sanctæ, Orlande de Lassus’ Tenebrae Responses for Holy Saturday, Gesualdo’s idiosyncratic responsory, Tistis est anima me, and Thomas Tallis’ splendid settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah.

About the Ensemble:

Founded in 1994, Polyhymnia creates vibrant, historically informed performances of music from the courts and cathedrals of the Renaissance world. Working with museums and libraries, liturgical historians and educational institutions, Polyhymnia preserves and revives masterworks of the choral literature composed in Europe and the Americas between the years 1450 and 1650. Since 2000, Artistic Director John Bradley has been preparing original editions of music for the ensemble in repertoire including numerous modern premiers of works which have remained unperformed since the 16th century.
