The Collect:

Rite I:
O God, who by thy Holy Spirit dost give to some the word of wisdom, to others the word of knowledge, and to others the word of faith: We praise thy Name for the gifts of grace manifested in thy servant Joseph Butler, and we pray that thy Church may never be destitute of such gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the same Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Rite II:
O God, by your Holy Spirit you give to some the word of wisdom, to others the word of knowledge, and to others the word of faith: We praise your Name for the gifts of grace manifested in your servant Joseph Butler, and we pray that your Church may never be destitute of such gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson:
Wisdom 7:7–14

7 Therefore I prayed, and understanding was given me;
I called on God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.
8 I preferred her to sceptres and thrones,
and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her.
9 Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem,
because all gold is but a little sand in her sight,
and silver will be accounted as clay before her.
10 I loved her more than health and beauty,
and I chose to have her rather than light,
because her radiance never ceases.
11 All good things came to me along with her,
and in her hands uncounted wealth.
12 I rejoiced in them all, because wisdom leads them;
but I did not know that she was their mother.
13 I learned without guile and I impart without grudging;
I do not hide her wealth,
14 for it is an unfailing treasure for mortals;
those who get it obtain friendship with God,
commended for the gifts that come from instruction.

Psalm:
Psalm 119:89-96 or 1

89 O Lord, your word is everlasting; *
       it stands firm in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness remains from one generation to another; *
       you established the earth, and it abides.
91 By your decree these continue to this day, *
       for all things are your servants.
92 If my delight had not been in your law, *
       I should have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your commandments, *
       because by them you give me life.
94 I am yours; oh, that you would save me! *
       for I study your commandments.
95 Though the wicked lie in wait for me to destroy me, *
       I will apply my mind to your decrees.
96 I see that all things come to an end, *
       but your commandment has no bounds.

or

1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of
                            the wicked, *
       nor lingered in the way of sinners,
       nor sat in the seats of the scornful!
2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, *
       and they meditate on his law day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams of water,
  bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; *
       everything they do shall prosper.
4 It is not so with the wicked; *
       they are like chaff which the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when
                            judgment comes, *
       nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, *
       but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Gospel:
Luke 10:25–28

25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 26He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ 27He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ 28And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’
