St. Barnabas

  • Is a small Episcopal congregation worshiping in a small refurbished church
  • Started as a place of worship for African Americans but is now more mixed
  • Rejoices in the fact that Jesus died, rose from the dead, and is coming again
  • Celebrates the Eucharist each week according to the Book of Common Prayer
  • Has a quieter service at 8.00 and a service with singing at 10.15
  • Follows the liturgy but does it in a relaxed way
  • Focuses on reading Scripture and thinking about its significance for us
  • Gives people chance to share their prayer need and what God has been doing with them
  • Sings traditional evangelical, African American, and mainstream hymns
  • Sometimes says “Amen” and “Hallelujah.”
  • Cooks and serves dinner once a month for fifty homeless people
  • Has a reputation for welcoming guests with open arms
  • Is led and maintained by people who do it for love

  • Has an African American deacon who focuses on pastoral care
