Episcopal Church campus chaplains meet to discuss ‘The Art of Resurrection’

Ordained and lay chaplains with responsibility for campus ministries at higher education institutions will have opportunities to meet, share and discuss their work at a special June conference.

Sponsored by The Episcopal Church Office of Campus Ministries, the annual Conference of Campus Ministers will be held June 30-July 3 at the Hotel and Conference Center at the University of Georgia, Athens. New chaplains” orientation is June 29-30.

This year”s conference theme, “The Art of Resurrection,” will provide a window into the wide and varied ministries provided by chaplains at campuses across the country.

“Our conferences have always focused on best practices, sharing information, and discussing issues related to the particularities of God”s mission on college campuses,” explained the Rev. G. Douglas Fenton, Young Adult and Campus Ministries Officer for The Episcopal Church. “In a time of great restraint financially, chaplains need to be even more creative in their ministries. Our dynamic theme – “The Art of Resurrection” – will offer fresh perspectives and hope-filled discoveries along with guaranteed great discussions, ideas and sharing.”

Keynote speaker, the Rev. Stan White, an Episcopal priest from the Diocese of Georgia, will offer two addresses: “Art, Creativity and Rebirth of the Soul” and “Art, Creativity and Reinventing Structures.”

Among the workshops and presenters are:

“Sacred Images: Making and Understanding Icons as Acts of Worship” – the Rev. Anthony Salzman, Greek Orthodox Campus Minister, University of Georgia, Athens, GA.
“So Much Media, So Little Time: Reaching Young Adults with Creative Communication” – Jason Sierra, Associate Program Officer for Young Adult and Campus Ministries for The Episcopal Church
“For the Journey: Bread Making as Worship and Community Builder” – the Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Episcopal Chaplain, Syracuse University, and Rector, Grace Episcopal Church, Syracuse, NY
“The Greening of Liturgy: Paperless Music and Worship” – the Rev. Amy McCreath, Episcopal Campus Minister, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
“Beyond the Walls: Service and Justice Ministries for Students” – Kim Lamberty, Executive Director of the Episcopal Service Corps, and Allison Liles, Board Member of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship

Assistant Bishop Keith B. Whitmore of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta will preach at the opening Eucharist on Wednesday. Bishop Scott Benhase of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia will preach at the closing Eucharist on Friday.

The new chaplains' orientation, slated for June 29 and 30, is open to any chaplain who has not previously attended the annual conference.
