The Rev. Maurice Dyer II has been named the canon to the Episcopal Church bishop suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries, a member of the presiding bishop’s staff. Dyer served most recently as a U.S. Space Force chaplain in Colorado.
In this full-time position, Dyer works with the Rt. Rev. Ann Ritonia, bishop suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries. Among his duties are the direct administrative support of more than 100 Episcopal priests who serve as federal chaplains or those candidates seeking endorsement in the armed forces, veterans’ hospitals, and federal prisons. He assists the bishop suffragan in the recruitment, support, and care of these chaplains.
Dyer, who holds a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, served as an associate rector in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania before becoming a military chaplain with the Air Force. In that role, he was part of a pioneering team of 10 chaplains who developed and provided spiritual support for the Space Force, including serving as rector of a Protestant community at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Base.
Dyer brings years of experience as a priest, chaplain at churches and universities, assistant director of multicultural ministries at Virginia Theological Seminary, ministry developer, and teacher. He volunteered in the Episcopal Young Adult Service Corps from 2013-2015.
