The General Convention is the final earthly authority and chief governing body of The Episcopal Church. It consists of a bicameral legislature: the House of Deputies and House of Bishops. Each diocese is represented in the House of Deputies by up to four lay deputies and four clergy deputies (deacons and priests), elected by their diocesan conventions. Bishops of the church, also elected by their respective dioceses before being confirmed by the whole church, are members of the House of Bishops.

The General Convention typically meets every three years to consider legislation, make policy, hold elections, adopt the churchwide budget, and amend the church’s constitution and canons. For legislation to be enacted, it must be adopted by both houses.

The General Convention is also an opportunity for the people of the church to come together for learning, networking, and collaboration across dioceses.

In the three years between meetings of the General Convention, various commissions, committees, and task forces are appointed by the presiding officers. These interim bodies study issues, carry out work assigned by the General Convention, develop resources, and prepare recommendations and legislation for future meetings of the General Convention.

The 82nd General Convention of The Episcopal Church will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, July 3-8, 2027. The 83rd General Convention is scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 2030.
