Exodus 24:12-18 Moses is called by God to ascend Mount Sinai again, after Moses receives the Ten Commandments and the elders of Israel worship and hold a feast on the mountain. God beckons Moses to come and receive the law on tablets of stone, signifying the permanence of that law. The text has Moses continually…
Deuteronomy 30:15-20 In the Old Covenant, the people of Israel had a choice: life or death. Not quite live or die – or even live and let live. Rather, it was an invitation to live a discerning life. It was the summons to righteousness – or friendship with God – and life-giving choices. The choice…
Isaiah 58:1-9a, [9b-12] God has told the prophet Isaiah to “Shout out, do not hold back!”, and Isaiah speaks accordingly, drawing out the hypocrisy of God’s people in their devotional practices. This continues the call for a renewal of heart and behavior that we heard in Micah last week. Isaiah says that the people of…
Isaiah 9:1-4 Transformation is at hand! One might look at this passage as a song of restoration because Isaiah is telling Israel to take heart, as they have lived through a conquest in which the tribal territories of Zebulun and Naphtali were captured (by the Assyrians). But Isaiah is clear that there is even more…
Isaiah 49:1-7 In this passage the author answers three important questions: What is the nature of the servant’s origin? What is the nature of the servant’s work? And who are the benefactors of the servant’s work? First, the nature of the servant’s origin is identified. According to the text, before birth, the servant has an…
Malachi 3:1-4 The Book of Malachi, a name that literally means “my messenger,” was written in the period following Israel’s exile in Babylonian and subsequent return, circa sixth century B.C. Malachi addressed a number of justice-related issues, but his book contains a great deal of reflection on the Temple cult of sacrifice and its priesthood….
