RCL: 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Ephesians 5:8-14, John 9:1-4, Psalm 23 Opening Prayer | Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and…
RCL: Luke 13:31-35; Psalm 63:1-8; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Luke 13:1-9 Luke 13:31-35 This passage marks Moses’ divine calling, in which he encounters God in the burning bush on Mount Horeb. The miraculous sight draws Moses in, demonstrating that revelation often requires attention and willingness to be interrupted. God identifies as the God of Abraham, Isaac,…
[RCL] 1 Samuel 16:1-13; Psalm 23; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41 1 Samuel 16:1-13 This story places us in a precarious moment in the history of the Israelites. After much badgering, God has agreed to give the people a king and Saul had been elevated to the role. But the novice monarch has already disappointed God…
RCL: Exodus 3:1-15; Psalm 63:1-8; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Luke 13:1-9 Exodus 3:1-15 This Scripture is a powerful truth of God reaching out through the miracle of daily life with a transcendent call, to join with God in obedience in order to set others free. After fleeing Egypt for committing murder, Moses is settled into his…
1 Samuel 16:1-13 How one comes to assume the role of leadership is often a concern not just in the Old Testament, but throughout the canon of scripture. Often, it is the one least expected who assumes the mantel of leadership. Samuel mistakenly assumes that Jesse’s firstborn is to be the anointed one. Yet, countering…
Exodus 3:1-15 Surely, surely, we are standing on holy ground. An ancient, well-worn story greets us this week: a bush alight that is never consumed and an eternally mysterious, divine self-disclosure. The Lord reveals a few things in this passage. One, God speaks the name of Moses and reveals a concern for God’s people –…
1 Samuel 16:1-13 Those anointed and called to do God’s work don’t always look and act as we’d expect them to. In this passage from Samuel, Jesse brings forward several candidates for the next king of Israel, all of whom are rejected with the phrase, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Instead, God calls…
Exodus 3:1-15 Most Christians live their lives with a willingness to provide service to others as a pathway of serving God’s mission in the world. At the same time we are often psychologically torn or confused by not knowing if we are the right person for God’s mission. This uncertainty of emotion exists despite our…
1 Samuel 16:1-13 “Le roi est mort. Vive le roi!” The king is dead. Long live the king! Wait. The king isn’t dead. What just happened? Does anyone hear shouts of coup d’etat? Luckily it all happened far outside the capitol in Bethlehem. Nevertheless, the prophet Samuel committed capital treason. He anointed a new king…
Exodus 3:1-15 I feel comfortable in assuming that no one reading these notes has ever been confronted by God in the physical form of a burning bush. But we do have vocabulary for talking about being “called” by God or following the “leading of the Spirit.” So why do we not see burning bushes as…
