New Episcopal communities interested in applying for a grant from The Episcopal Church are invited to register for an informational webinar on July 1. Because the grant process has undergone significant updates, those considering applying are encouraged to carefully read all the new application materials and attend the webinar, which will include time for questions and answers. Grant applications are due July 15.
This new granting approach grows from a 2025-2026 churchwide assessment that included a network of church-planting leaders and looked closely at what is working well in Episcopal dioceses and congregations, where gaps exist, and how best to empower local efforts through flexible, context-driven models of funding, coaching, and other forms of support.
The grants—funded by the General Convention budget—are designed to support new Episcopal communities currently in development that seek to reach new people, respond to their local contexts, and share the Good News of Jesus Christ in meaningful ways. The new process invites dioceses and community leaders to share who they are serving; what they are learning in their context; and what resources will help them take the next faithful step in growing.
New Episcopal communities may take many forms, including traditional worshiping communities, faith-based neighborhood ministries, cultural fellowships, and other innovative groups that bring people together to encounter Jesus and grow in faith.
Communities applying for grants should generally be less than 10 years old—though exceptions may be considered—and operate under the oversight of a bishop and in partnership with their diocese.
Individual grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to support communities as they take their next faithful step in development. Funds may be used for operational and program-related expenses. These grants are designed to complement, not replace, diocesan investment.
The Advisory Group on Church Planting and Revitalization, which will recommend proposals to Executive Council for funding, will seek applicants who align with the mission priorities of The Episcopal Church as expressed in General Convention Resolutions 2024-A045 and 2024-A046. Among these priorities are engaging people not currently connected to an Episcopal church, reaching communities historically underrepresented in The Episcopal Church, developing culturally rooted expressions of Christian community, and demonstrating a vision for long-term presence.
