Although you are sovereign in strength you judge with mildness and with great forbearance you govern us; for you have power to act whenever you choose. Wisdom 12:18 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now. And not only the creation but we ourselves who have the first fruits…
Today’s lessons celebrate one of the most overwhelming aspects of God’s nature — abundance. The very existence and creation of everything, us included, demonstrates God as the ultimate giver. So awesome is God’s ability to do this, that even in the midst of broken lives and broken dreams, we humans can experience this abundance. So…
There was once a time when any of us going to a service of Holy Communion in an Episcopal Church might hear some of Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel. “Come to me all who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Or, in a slightly older form of the English…
The haughtiness of people shall behumbled,And the pride of everyone shallbe brought low;And the Lord alone will beexalted on that day.— Isaiah 2:11 We know that our old self was crucifiedwith him so that the body of sin mightbe destroyed, and we might no longerbe enslaved to sin.— Romans 6:6 Those who find their life…
Let nothing disturb you,Let nothing make you afraid,All things are passing,God never changes.Patience obtains all things.Nothing is lacking to the one who has God–God alone is enough. These words, from a meditation titled “St. Teresa’s bookmark,” are a fine summary of today’s readings from Scripture. They all speak to us, strangely enough, about the gift…
We have so many ways of learning about God. We learn from Holy Scripture, of course. We learn from our worship, from the seasons of the year and the glories of nature, from one another, in our prayers. There is a way of watching movies that can open our minds and hearts to God in…
God beckons us in the most unusual and exciting ways. Slow to anger and quite creative, God challenges us to pay attention to the small things and follow Christ. Whenever God calls us to serve, we are transformed by an experience that strengthens our faith and conviction in the love of Christ. It is in…
The Old Testament lesson for today is an emphatic repetition of an earlier passage in Deuteronomy that is based on the Shema, the great trumpet call in Hebrew of, “Hear o Israel,” followed by the commandment to a belief in the One God. The words that must be obeyed are: “The Lord is our God,…
Trinity Sunday — what an amazing thing it is to celebrate a doctrine of the church with its own Sunday in the church year! There are designated Sundays for a couple of Christianity’s central doctrines — the Incarnation and the Resurrection — but these are directly related to the life of Jesus. The doctrine of…
“In the thick of this thing called life…weighing the loss and counting the cost—together” What in the world can September 11th teach us about companionship in mission? Good question. It is right up there with what use can hardship, suffering, dying and evil be to God’s presence and work in our lives. Reams of paper,…
In John’s Gospel this morning, the gift of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ disciples seems to be part and parcel of their initial experience of Jesus’ resurrection. If our worship schedule in church followed John’s picture, we would be celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit on Easter Sunday evening. The fact that we don’t…
Today is the Sunday after the Ascension; and this year we hear Luke tell the story of the risen Lord’s departure from his disciples. The Ascension is probably not the best known of the feast days on the calendar, but it is one that takes on increasing depth and importance the more you think about…
