Easter 7C

[RCL] Acts 16:16-34; Psalm 97; Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20-21; John 17:20-26 Today’s gospel reading contains the climax and culmination of what is known as the “Farewell Discourse” or “High Priestly Prayer”.  In this scene, John has Jesus and the disciples (minus Judas Iscariot) in the room after the washing of the feet and the last…

Today the scriptures teach us that the Gospel of Jesus Christ, above all other things, is liberation. We see this dynamic all over our story from Acts. We read that Paul and Silas, as they minister in Philippi, attract a hanger-on. She is an enslaved woman, and she is said to have a spirit of…

Imagine thousands of people dressed in white clothes for the Feast of the Epiphany singing, praying, and waiting with anticipation outside a church near the Red Sea in Ethiopia. Saint Paul calls us to be those people who pray without ceasing. The world is a scary place. All three of the lessons we have chosen to read today attest to that fact! In the first lesson (Samuel), the people realize that they have gone against God’s will by asking for a king. But everyone…

Crucifixion. Resurrection. Ascension. All of these were very public events as the first followers of Jesus began to form the community we now call the church. Busy, public events are important. But public events are just that — public. On display. Other people are watching, watching not only the event itself, but also people’s reactions…
