RCL: Jeremiah 8:18-9:1; Psalm 79:1-9; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 16:1-13 The collect this week invokes our creator to help us “not to be anxious about earthly things,” while the Old Testament readings present a sequence of lamentations about the earthly sufferings experienced by the people of Israel, per Jeremiah and Psalm 79. The New Testament…
[RCL] Jeremiah 8:18-9:1; Psalm 79:1-9; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 16:1-13 Jesus offers money management advice in our Gospel reading, saying, “Make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone they may welcome you into the eternal homes.” This does not sound like solid investment advice, does it? Follow that…
[RCL] Jeremiah 8:18-9:1; Psalm 79:1-9; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 16:1-13 On some Sundays, it’s enticing to piece together a puzzle. It’s interesting to do interpretive gymnastics and sit in the presence of a bewildering word. On some Sundays, it’s a whole lot of fun to weave together an impossible text and sit in the heap…
[RCL] Jeremiah 8:18-9:1; Psalm 79:1-9; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 16:1-13 Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 Here in the eighth chapter of Jeremiah, we hear directly from God’s voice, as God laments the waywardness of God’s chosen people. Watching as the people of Israel worship idols and turn away from their relationship with the Divine, God cries, “Grief is…
Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 There are times when we feel the weight of life on our shoulders. Jeremiah laments, “My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick” (8:18, NRSV). In this passage, Jeremiah is mourning not only the upcoming destruction of Jerusalem but also the exile of his people. The world is crumbling…
[RCL]: Jeremiah 8:18-9:1; Psalm 79:1-9; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 16:1-13 Every now and then, we come upon a passage of Scripture that is especially challenging to preach on. Sometimes, the homiletical difficulty comes from the fact that the text is so familiar that just about everything that can be said about it has been said….
There is a wonderful scene in C.S. Lewis’s famous novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe where Lucy, the youngest the children to cross into the magical world of Narnia, converses with Mr. Beaver. In this magical land of talking animals and evil queens, Lucy feels both wonder and fear after hearing about Aslan, the original…
Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 There are times of great suffering in which we may feel that all hope is lost and that there may never be joy in our souls again. This may be triggered by the loss of a loved one or from a tragedy in your local community or nation. There are painful events in…
Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 This passage comes from the section of Jeremiah that contains a series of poetic oracles of God’s judgment in the form of conquest and destruction by Babylon, the foe from the north. It is a dialogue between the prophet Jeremiah, God and the people of Israel. It is not always clear who is…
Jesus is not making a whole lot of sense in our gospel today, at least at first blush. He tells the Parable of the Dishonest Manager, and people have beat their heads against this text for generations trying to figure out what in the world he was talking about. Clergy, lay people, seminary professors and…
“Make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth.” Jesus didn’t really say that, did he? Imagine the disciples hearing this story. They probably ask Jesus to repeat himself, clean the wax out of their ears, and look at each other for verification: did he really just say that? It seems he did. Someone remembered…
