In…
[RCL] Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15; Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16; 1 Timothy 6:6-19; Luke 16:19-31 If you have ever had occasion to stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon, you know that its vastness is difficult to take in. The distances and depths appear unreal to human eyes unaccustomed to such magnitude. Our brains, dazzled and dismayed…
[RCL] Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15; Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16; 1 Timothy 6:6-19; Luke 16:19-31 Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15 This reading from Jeremiah finds us at a time of certainty: certainty that Jerusalem is about to be destroyed. [RCL] Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15; Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16; 1 Timothy 6:6-19; Luke 16:19-31 We have all heard that the “love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” While that is certainly true, the maxim alone may leave us feeling judged, helpless, or defensive. Thank goodness that isn’t the only thing Paul said about…
Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15 This reading from Jeremiah finds us at a time of certainty: certainty that Jerusalem is about to be destroyed. Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, is besieging Jerusalem and its fall is a forgone conclusion. This is not the time to invest in real estate. However, Jeremiah purchases a field from his cousin, Hanamel,…

From the earliest of times people have told stories about the wicked getting their come-uppance. It’s rooted in the now-popular belief in karma, although the idea of revenge, implicit in the way many now use the term isn’t quite what it means in Eastern religions. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is not…
Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15 The Hebrew prophets were renowned not just for prophetic words, but also for prophetic actions. Ezekiel lay on his side for a whole year. Hosea married a prostitute and gave her children insulting names. As for Jeremiah, well, he buys his cousin’s field. We hear every detail of this seemingly ordinary financial…
