Just War and Pacifism
In considering when and if it is morally justified to engage in war, The Episcopal Church’s General Convention has urged church members to study and understand both the traditions of Just War and pacifism.
In 2023, Armed Forces and Federal Ministries and the church’s Standing Commission on World Mission responded to this call with the release of the Military Chaplains Just War Education Project, featuring articles and videos designed to help inform chaplain ministry—as well as to engage and educate the public.
The church also offers a conscientious objector packet designed to help Episcopalians think responsibly about participation in the armed forces and in war situations while in the armed forces.

This grant-funded educational project, called for by the church’s 2015 General Convention, includes the perspectives of Episcopal military chaplains and academic, government, and military experts.

Conscientious objection
The Episcopal Church offers pastoral support to those considering and embracing options of conscientious objection, selective conscientious objection, conscientious resistance, and conscientious participation.
