Welcomes You

The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde

Bishop of Washington
Diocese:
Washington
Bio:

On June 18, 2011, the Diocese of Washington elected the Rev. Dr. Mariann Budde to serve as its ninth bishop. She was consecrated and installed on Nov. 12, 2011, and is the first woman to serve as diocesan bishop in the Diocese of Washington.

Prior to this, Budde served for 18 years as rector of St. John’s, Minneapolis, guiding that congregation through significant membership and financial growth, two capital campaigns, and comprehensive ministry development.

Since 2001, Budde has served as a Conference Leader for CREDO, an organization committed to clergy wellness and vocational renewal. Ministry with clergy colleagues is one of her greatest strengths and joys.

During her time in the Diocese of Minnesota, she helped lead the diocesan Commission for Mission Strategy, focusing her efforts on the renewal of congregations. Diocesan mission strategy also was the focus of her Doctor of Ministry thesis: Engaging Leadership for Change. A practitioner of systems theory, she loves working in complex organizations.

Her other diocesan ministries at this time included serving as Dean of the Minneapolis Region, General Convention deputy, on the Standing Committee, and in support of diocesan multi-cultural ministries. She has a long history of work among Spanish-speaking people.

In her role as public leader in Minneapolis, Budde often was called upon to organize or speak at public events. A well-regarded preacher, teacher, and conference leader, she is the author ofGathering Up the Fragments: Preaching as Spiritual Practice, published in 2009.

Born in 1959, Budde received her B.A. in history at the University of Rochester, NY in 1982, graduating magna cum laude. She earned both her M.Div and D.Min degrees from Virginia Theological Seminary (1988 and 2007, respectively).

She was ordained a deacon on May 28, 1988 and then a priest on March 4, 1989. She served as Associate Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio (1988-1993).

She and her husband, Paul Budde, have two sons, Amos (23) and Patrick (20.)
