June 1, 2011

1 June 2011Stanford University The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts SchoriPresiding Bishop and PrimateThe Episcopal Church I’m going to start with a religious question – why are we here? I don’t think we’re here looking for exactly what some of my classmates sought nearly 40 years ago. Once in a while when the lecture was less […]

Sermon for the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Full Communion with Lutherans

May 1, 2011

Swords into plowshares, and spears into pruning hooks? Maybe we’re talking about shepherds’ crooks. I’m not aware of any recent wars fought between Anglicans and Lutherans. There probably haven’t been any swords or spears used since the days of the reformation. The last formal war between Canada and the United States ended two centuries ago […]

Sermon for the Second Sunday Easter, Diocese of Western New York

May 1, 2011

Have you ever been to jail – even just to visit? Many people find it pretty intimidating just to walk in there and hear the doors clang shut behind you. Even people who go in frequently notice the restrictions – you leave your keys and your ID with the guards as you enter, there are […]

Diocese of Pittsburgh Chrism Mass Sermon

April 19, 2011

Late last fall, I was in New York with one night to run an errand. I started walking across town and began to encounter police barricades. They’re like portable fences that get locked together to keep people on the sidewalk and out of the street. As I went, more and more people began to converge […]

Palm Sunday, Newton Grove, NC

April 17, 2011

Many churches are celebrated today with a special type of palm leaf. Palmas Eco are collected by workers in Mexico and Guatemala, sorted, and sold through cooperatives that help their members keep more of the money paid for their palms. Instead of paying a dealer to sort and pack the palms, the cooperatives do the work themselves. Members also learn to harvest palm branches in ways that help preserve plants and the forest.
