The Rt. Rev. Kevin S. Brown was elected as the 11th bishop of Delaware on Saturday, July 15, 2017 amidst abundant joy and a boundless spirit. Music, singing, dancing, and clapping were plentiful throughout this blissful day. The announcement of a new bishop came after the tally of the fifth ballot and the lighting of the candles on the altar. Peace and grace then filled the convention hall, as delegates and clergy came forward to sign the Testimonial of Election on the altar, while singing Sing a New Church.
Kevin will bring many gifts to Delaware and looks forward to serving Christ with the diocese, and listening to the various stories and ministries that are waiting to be told. Kevin, and his wife Caroline, will move to the First State from Charlotte, North Carolina later in the fall.
Kevin grew up in Asheville, North Carolina and has been an Episcopalian since the age of five. He is a 1991 graduate of Duke University with a double major in Psychology and Mathematics. He received a Masters in Business Administration at the University of West Florida in 1996 while serving as an Acquisitions Officer in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked in multiple roles in finance and marketing for FedEx Express and helped launch and manage a successful money management firm.
Kevin discerned his call to the priesthood and received his Masters in Divinity from The General Theological Seminary in New York. He then accepted the call to become Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Paris, Tennessee, in 2007. He was called to serve as Rector at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2010, and inspired growth in the breadth and impact of ministries in, with, and to the wider community. While there he led the steady growth of parish membership and annual giving.
Kevin has been engaged in the city and in the Diocese of North Carolina. Most recently has served on the clergy advisory council of MeckMin Interfaith Network, and on the boards of Trinity Episcopal School and La Escuelita Weekday School. He is a past Board member and Executive Committee member of Loaves and Fishes of Mecklenburg County and an alumni of Leadership Charlotte (Class XXXIII). Kevin served as the Dean of the diocese’s Charlotte Convocation, and is an active member of multiple diocesan committees. He looks forward to bringing this knowledge, expertise, and passion to the Diocese of Delaware.
Kevin’s wife Caroline is also a Duke graduate and is an accomplished artist. Kevin and Caroline have two college-age daughters. Kevin enjoys jogging and reading, though not at the same time.
The Rt. Rev. Kevin S. Brown was ordained and consecrated on December 9, 2017 by the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Delaware State University in Dover was the site of the service.
