Words like “unprecedented” seem too small to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has sorely afflicted the lives of millions of people around the world. It is hard to get one’s mind around the impact of this crisis. And yet, for many Christians in the Middle East, the pandemic is just one more crisis to add to the list.

Reflecting upon the situation at the Ras Morbat Eye Clinic in Yemen, the Ven. Bill Schwartz, Archdeacon for the Gulf in the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, writes: “The COVID crisis is actually only one more difficulty for them in the face of three other ongoing epidemics (cholera, dengue fever, malaria) and all are greatly affected by all of the problems of the ongoing civil war.”

In the Middle East, the political instability of neighboring countries faced in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and elsewhere can overshadow all other concerns. Governments in turmoil continue to create conditions that promote poverty, food insecurity, and economic instability which put a desperate strain on refugees and displaced persons, health care, education, and family life in the best of times. 

The Good Friday Offering is an opportunity throughout the Episcopal Church to support our Anglican sisters and brothers in their ministry to their neighbors to help meet the needs of innocent people caught in the middle of these realities.

Ofrenda de Viernes Santo

 Palabras como “sin precedentes” se quedan demasiado pequeñas para describir el impacto de la pandemia de COVID-19, que ha afectado terriblemente la vida de millones de personas en todo el mundo. Es difícil hacerse una idea de la gravedad de esta crisis. Sin embargo y a pesar de eso, para muchos cristianos de Oriente Medio, la pandemia es un problema más que añadir a la lista.

Reflexionando sobre la situación de la clínica oftalmológica de Ras Morbat, en Yemen, el venerable Bill Schwartz, archidiácono para el Golfo de la diócesis de Chipre y el Golfo, escribe: “La crisis del COVID es, en realidad, sólo una dificultad más para ellos de cara a otras tres epidemias que están enfrentando (cólera, dengue, malaria), las que se ven aun más afectadas por todos los problemas que plantea la actual guerra civil “.

En Oriente Medio, la inestabilidad política que se vive en los países vecinos del Líbano, Siria, Iraq y Yemen, entre otros, eclipsa todos los demás problemas. Los gobiernos convulsionados siguen creando condiciones que promueven la pobreza, la inseguridad alimentaria y la inestabilidad económica, lo que se traduce en una presión desesperante para los refugiados y desplazados, la atención sanitaria, la educación y la vida familiar en el mejor de los tiempos.

 La Ofrenda del Viernes Santo es una oportunidad para que toda la Iglesia Episcopal apoye a nuestros hermanos y hermanas anglicanos en su ministerio con el prójimo, a fin de ayudar a cubrir las necesidades de personas inocentes atrapadas en medio de estas realidades.
