By Heather Melton, (she/her) UTO Staff Officer This summer has been incredibly busy at UTO, so I want to start off by expressing my thankfulness and gratitude to all of you for your patience while I try to manage all the moving parts. With that said, this newsletter is packed with information about UTO things,…
While there is not a specific version of Sacred Ground for young people, there are a number of excellent faith-based curricula for talking about race with youth. Whether you engage with youth through schools, Sunday school, intergenerational worship, camp, Vacation Bible School, or just about any other setting, there are programs that will suit your…

During their August recess, members of Congress return to their districts, where they often host town halls and meet with constituents. This offers you an in-person opportunity to raise issues of importance with your elected federal officials. As August approaches, visit your elected officials’ websites to learn what events they are hosting and attending. With the midterm elections only a few months away, these can be…
I am no stranger to new places, but my adventures had never taken me anywhere like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) until a trip for faith leaders organized by the American Lands Project in June. There are few places left that are as extreme, remote, and vast. At over 19 million acres, ANWR is…
At the 65th General Convention in 1976 in Minneapolis, The Episcopal Church adopted a resolution affirming that homosexual people are children of God with a full and equal claim upon the church’s love, acceptance, and pastoral concern and care. Fifty years later, Episcopalians are invited to return to Minneapolis Sept. 3–5 for “Full & Equal: 50 Years…
By Heather Melton, UTO Staff Officer At the time of writing this article, the 2026 UTO grants have only just been awarded, so none of the projects has started yet. With that said, I wanted to share the story of one of our new grant recipients because it is a part of the world that…
From the UTO Finance and Archives Committee Many of our parish UTO leaders are working hard to encourage folks to donate online using the QR code on the boxes/envelopes, and we appreciate the effort. Giving online is incredibly easy and gives folks who don’t use cash a way to connect with UTO. If you let…
By Karin Elsen, UTO Board President and chair of the Formation and Development Committee UTO has had a great start to the year and is finding new ways to support spiritual growth. There are so many exciting projects on this…
Updates from the UTO Board We know it is early, but this year, Heather is working on customized kits highlighting past grants awarded in your diocese and designed to engage people in finding out about the history and status of those sites today. We will use this information to prepare for the upcoming 150th anniversary of…
By Heather Melton, (she/her) UTO Staff Officer I’ve started joking that my title should be UTO staff officer and chaos coordinator. On my to-do list for this week is “fix explosions; make bigger.” I was talking with a coworker about the popular “volcano day” craft project that will be included in our Vacation Bible School…
