Meet an Evangelist: Stephen Richards

Tell us about yourself and your work. Where are you located? What do you do with your time? Do you have any hobbies?

I’m the Communications Specialist at the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, N.Y. I transitioned to this communications position after 30 years in local television broadcast news, where I ran two different network affiliated news departments for the past 8 years. The transition out of the corporate news biz and into communications became even brighter when this job opened up in the Episcopal Church I’ve been attending my whole life.

How did you come to/find the Episcopal Church?

I’m a cradle Episcopalian. Growing up, my dad was the choir director and my mom was a Sunday school teacher, and our parish was thriving with families.

What does it mean to be an evangelist?

For me, it’s sharing the love and salvation through Jesus Christ.

What do you want the whole Church to know about evangelism?

Evangelism comes from the Gospel, through God’s word. I believe one has to study and know God’s word before sharing. To me, it’s noticing when someone is in need and then opening up minds and hearts to Jesus as the answer.

Where do you see Jesus in your daily life and work?

I see Jesus right next to me, to call upon whenever, especially in times of need, but equally in times of thankfulness.

Evangelism catalysts, invited by their bishops, will meet the day before Evangelism Matters 2018 – March 14, 2018 – to learn from and network with other evangelists from across the Episcopal Church. Interested in joining? Contact your bishop’s office!
