Alphege
(954-Apr. 19, 1012). Also known as Aelfheah, Elphege, or Godwine. Alphege was an anchorite monk near Bath, England, until Nov. 19, 984, when he was consecrated Bishop of Winchester. In Nov. 1006, he was translated to the Archbishopric of Canterbury. He served there until he was murdered by the Danes during a drunken feast. Alphege is considered a martyr, and his life is commemorated in the Episcopal calendar of the church year on Apr. 19.
