Church of the Advent, Boston
It was founded by lay people in 1844 and has long been one of the leading Anglo-catholic parishes in the American Church. Its strong adherence to the principles of the Oxford Movement and the ritualist movement often has put it at odds with other Episcopalians. Innovative practices concerning liturgy and parish governance led to conflict with the Bishop of Massachusetts, Manton Eastburn. He refused to make a visitation to the parish. This refusal precipitated passage of a canon at the 1856 General Convention requiring bishops to visit each parish in their jurisdictions at least once every three years.
