Emmanuel
A Hebrew word that means “God is with us.” It is mentioned in Is 7:14 as a sign from the Lord and the name of a child to be born. In the NT it is used only in Matthew at the beginning of his gospel as a way of understanding the significance of Jesus. Many scholars have suggested that its mention at the beginning of Matthew is directly connected with Jesus' concluding statement in Matthew: “I will be with you to the end.” The meaning of the term is vividly recalled in the Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” (Hymn 56).
