Gardiner, Robert Hallowell

(Nov. 5, 1882-Sept. 16, 1944). Lay ecumenical leader. He was born in Newton, Massachusetts. Gardiner received his B.A. in 1903, his M.A. in 1904, and his law degree in 1907 from Harvard University. He was a major in World War I, commanding the 3rd Battalion, 303rd Field Artillery in France. In 1928 Gardiner organized the Fiduciary Trust Company of Boston and served as its president until his death. He was a member of the National Council of the Episcopal Church and attended every General Convention from 1926 until his death. He was a warden of Christ Church, Gardiner, Maine, and a trustee of the Church Pension Fund. Gardiner was secretary of the Episcopal Joint Commission on Faith and Order. He and Bishop Charles Henry Brent were the Episcopal founders of the ecumenical Faith and Order Movement. Gardiner died in Gardiner, Maine.
