An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church

Geneva Bible

English translation of the Bible published at Geneva, Switzerland, in 1560. Based on translations by William Tyndale and Miles Coverdale, it was the work of Protestant exiles in Geneva. Its notes reflect Calvinist influence. The Geneva Bible was the first English edition with verse numeration. It is known as the “Breeches Bible” because its translation of Gn 3:7 states that Adam and Eve made “breeches” for themselves. It was the most widely read English version of the Bible until publication of the Authorized Version.
