Horrocks, James
(c. 1734-Nov. 20, 1772). Commissary to Virginia and sixth president of the College of William and Mary. He was probably born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. Horrocks received his B.A. in 1755 and his M.A. in 1758 from Trinity College, Cambridge University. After his ordination he was licensed to preach in Virginia in 1761. In 1762 he became the master of the grammar school connected with the College of William and Mary. From 1764 until 1771, he was president of William and Mary and rector of Bruton Parish. In 1768 the Bishop of London appointed Horrocks the fifth Commissary to Virginia. In 1771 he returned to England. Horrocks died in Oporto, Portugal.
