Klein, Walter Conrad

(May 28, 1904-Mar. 1, 1980). Bishop and OT scholar. Klein was born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1924 and from the General Theological Seminary in 1929. He was ordained deacon on May 17, 1927, and priest on June 24, 1928. From 1930 to 1943, he held parochial charges successively in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. He also served as lecturer at the Philadelphia Divinity School, and earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1940. Following duty as a naval chaplain, he joined the staff of the Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem in 1946 and was a canon of St. George's Cathedral. From 1950 until 1959, Klein was professor of Old Testament Literature and Languages at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. From July 1, 1959, until 1963, he was the dean of Nashotah House. On June 29, 1963, he was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of Northern Indiana. He became Bishop of Northern Indiana on Nov. 1, 1963. Klein retired on June 23, 1972. He died in LaPorte, Indiana.
