An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church

More Hymns and Spiritual Songs

A 1971 hymnal supplement, prepared by the Joint Commission on Church Music of the Episcopal Church and published in a loose-leaf format. It has a wide variety of musical resources, including traditional hymns, folk songs, and ancient melodies. The first section of the collection, “Songs for Liturgy,” contained settings of music for the offices and the eucharist. Norman Mealy served as general editor for this section. The second section of the collection, “More Hymns and Spiritual Songs,” contained 71 hymns. Lee. H. Bristol was general editor for the second section. A second, paperback edition of this part of the original collection contained ten additional hymns. It was published by the Joint Commission in 1977. This 1971 publication and its 1977 edition provided many musical settings of service music and hymns found in The Hymnal 1982. It also established the form of notation used in the plainsong settings of canticles found in The Book of Canticles and The Hymnal 1982.
