Wesley, Samuel Sebastian
(Aug. 14, 1810-Apr. 19, 1876). English church musician and composer. He was born in London, the grandson of Charles Wesley. Wesley studied music at Oxford University and was organist at Hereford Cathedral, 1832-1835; Exeter Cathedral, 1835-1842; Leeds Parish Church, 1842-1849; Winchester Cathedral, 1849-1865; and Gloucester Cathedral, 1865-1876. He has five hymn tunes in The Hymnal 1982, including Alleluia, used with the text “Alleluia! sing to Jesus!” (Hymn 461), and Aurelia, used with the text “The Church's one foundation” (Hymn 525). He also wrote S 251, an Anglican chant setting for “The Song of Zechariah.” Wesley died in Gloucester.
