The Collect:

Rite I:
O loving God, who didst call thy servant Aidan from the cloister to re-establish the Christian mission in northern England: Grant, we beseech thee, that we, following his example, may use what thou hast given us for the relief of human need, and may persevere in commending the saving Gospel of our Redeemer Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Rite II:

First Lesson: Proverbs 3:21-32 

²¹ My child, do not let these escape from your sight:
    keep sound wisdom and prudence,
²² and they will be life for your soul
    and adornment for your neck.
²³ Then you will walk on your way securely
    and your foot will not stumble.
²⁴ If you sit down, you will not be afraid;
    when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
²⁵ Do not be afraid of sudden panic,
    or of the storm that strikes the wicked;
²⁶ for the Lord will be your confidence
    and will keep your foot from being caught.

²⁷ Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
    when it is in your power to do it.
²⁸ Do not say to your neighbour, ‘Go, and come again;
    tomorrow I will give it’—when you have it with you.
²⁹ Do not plan harm against your neighbour
    who lives trustingly beside you.
³⁰ Do not quarrel with anyone without cause,
    when no harm has been done to you.
³¹ Do not envy the violent
    and do not choose any of their ways;
³² for the perverse are an abomination to the Lord,
    but the upright are in his confidence.

Psalm: Psalm 103:13-18 

¹³ As a father cares for his children, *
so does the Lord care for those who fear him.
¹⁴ For he himself knows whereof we are made; *
he remembers that we are but dust.
¹⁵ Our days are like the grass; *
we flourish like a flower of the field;
¹⁶ When the wind goes over it, it is gone, *
and its place shall know it no more.
¹⁷ But the merciful goodness of the Lord endures for ever
on those who fear him, *
and his righteousness on children’s children;
¹⁸ On those who keep his covenant *
and remember his commandments and do them.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 9:16–23

¹⁶If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! ¹⁷For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. ¹⁸What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel.

19 For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. ²⁰To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. ²¹To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. ²²To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I might by any means save some. ²³I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.

Gospel: Matthew 19:27–30

²⁷ Then Peter said in reply, ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?’ ²⁸Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. ²⁹And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. ³⁰But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.
