Almighty God, who didst inspire thy servant Anna Julia Haywood Cooper with the love of learning and the skill of teaching: Enlighten us more and more through the discipline of learning, and deepen our commitment to the education of all thy children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Proverbs 9:7–12

⁷ Whoever corrects a scoffer wins abuse;
   whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt. 
⁸ A scoffer who is rebuked will only hate you;
   the wise, when rebuked, will love you. 
⁹ Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser still;
   teach the righteous and they will gain in learning. 
¹⁰ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
   and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. 
¹¹ For by me your days will be multiplied,
   and years will be added to your life. 
¹² If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
   if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

Psalm: Psalm 10:15-19 

¹⁵ The helpless commit themselves to you, *
for you are the helper of orphans.
¹⁶ Break the power of the wicked and evil; *
search out their wickedness until you find none.
¹⁷ The Lord is King for ever and ever; *
the ungodly shall perish from his land.
¹⁸ The Lord will hear the desire of the humble; *
you will strengthen their heart and your ears shall hear;
¹⁹ To give justice to the orphan and oppressed, *
so that mere mortals may strike terror no more.

Second Lesson: 1 Timothy 4:6-16 

⁶ If you put these instructions before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching that you have followed. ⁷ Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives’ tales. Train yourself in godliness, ⁸ for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. ⁹ The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. ¹⁰ For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all people, especially of those who believe.

¹¹ These are the things you must insist on and teach. ¹² Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. ¹³ Until I arrive, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. ¹⁴ Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. ¹⁵ Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. ¹⁶ Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Gospel: Luke 4:38-42

³⁸ After leaving the synagogue he entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her. ³⁹ Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them.

⁴⁰ As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them. ⁴¹ Demons also came out of many, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.

⁴² At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them.
