Rite I:
Almighty God, who hast restored our human nature to heavenly glory through the perfect obedience of our Savior Jesus Christ: Enliven in thy Church, we beseech thee, the passion for justice and truth, that, like thy servant Frederick Denison Maurice, we may work and pray for the triumph of the kingdom of Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Rite II:

First Lesson: Numbers 21:4–9

⁴From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. ⁵The people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.’ ⁶Then the Lord sent poisonousserpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. ⁷The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. ⁸And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’ ⁹So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

Psalm: Psalm 145

¹ I will exalt you, O God my King, *
       and bless your Name for ever and ever.
² Every day will I bless you *
       and praise your Name for ever and ever.
³ Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; *
       there is no end to his greatness.
⁴ One generation shall praise your works to another *
       and shall declare your power.
⁵ I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty *

       and satisfy the needs of every living creature.

       and loving in all his works.

       to all who call upon him faithfully.
²⁰ He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; *
       he hears their cry and helps them.
²¹ The Lord preserves all those who love him, *
       but he destroys all the wicked.
²² My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord; *

Gospel: John 18:33-37

³³ Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ ³⁴Jesus answered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?’ ³⁵Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?’ ³⁶Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ ³⁷Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’
