James De Koven, Priest, 1879

The Collect:

Rite I:
Almighty and everlasting God, who led thy servant James De Koven to honor thy presence at the altar, and constantly to point to Christ: Grant that all ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may impart to thy faithful people the knowledge of thy presence and the truth of thy grace; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Rite II:
Almighty and everlasting God, who led your servant James De Koven to honor your presence at the altar, and constantly to point to Christ: Grant that all ministers and stewards of your mysteries may impart to your faithful people the knowledge of your presence and the truth of your grace; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: 2 Timothy 2:10-15

10Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11The saying is sure:
If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he will also deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself.

14 Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. 15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.

Psalm: Psalm 84:7–12

7 Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; *
       hearken, O God of Jacob.
8 Behold our defender, O God; *
       and look upon the face of your Anointed.
9 For one day in your courts is better than
                              a thousand in my own room, *
       and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God
       than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.
10 For the Lord God is both sun and shield; *
       he will give grace and glory;
11 No good thing will the Lord withhold *
       from those who walk with integrity.
12 O Lord of hosts, *
       happy are they who put their trust in you!

Gospel: Matthew 13:31–33

31He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’

33He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.’
